OVERVIEW:

Lumin Consulting was tasked with the responsibility of conducting a
scientifically accurate strategy for the Jamaica Hope Cattle.
The aim was to improve productivity and the quality of milk by increasing
the genetic potential for milk production and improved environmental
adaptability. to face and virtual workshops and training sessions.
Technical assistance sessions were also offered to select practitioners
and exposure to international events to foster peer to peer learning.

KEY RESULTS:

  • In collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF) an advanced ten (10) days training was
    efficiently conducted for thirty (30) high-level MICAF staff in animal breeding and genetics; introductory genomics and bioinformatics and selection and breeding strategies;

  • A Genetic characterization of the Jamaica Hope Nucleus Herd via
    DNA Fingerprinting and the development of a Genome Map/Profile
    was successfully completed;

  • A step by step logical framework was designed for staff use in
    conducting Genetic fingerprinting. This framework will improve
    the client’s record keeping and the selective breeding systems.
